Gingerbread Playdough

One of my favorite December activities with my kids is making gingerbread play dough. It’s a quick activity that is hands on and easy when the cabin fever gets real. This December our cabin fever is in high gear with a new baby and everybody home together all day every day.

The smell of it is delicious, and unlike store bought Play Doh, homemade play dough has a soft and more pliable texture. If you store it in a tupperware container, it will keep for weeks without drying out.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/4 cup Salt
  • 2 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 TBSP Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp ground Cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground Ginger
  • 2 tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice

Directions

Mix all of the dry ingredients into a sauce pan and then add the wet ingredients and stir to combine. Heat the combined ingredients over medium heat on your store, stirring constantly. You will start to see it thicken and dry out against the sides of the pan. Once it forms into a ball in the pan, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool completely on a plate or your counter. Once cooled, you can work the play dough with your hands until it is soft.

This is a basic homemade play dough recipe that can be made without the spices to make a plain play dough, or you can add 4 tsp. cocoa powder instead to make it Hot Chocolate playdough!

You can roll it out and make Christmas shapes with cookie cutters or use it like normal Play Doh. Enjoy!
